Attorney Profile

 

     Philip J. Thomas has been a licensed Michigan Attorney for 24 years.  He spent the first 18 years of his career at three separate public offices: the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission, and the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission.  He served as an assistant prosecutor at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for approximately five years. While at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, he garnered a reputation as a highly aggressive and competent trial lawyer who obtained a high conviction rate. Following his service as an assistant prosecutor, Mr. Thomas served as an ethics prosecutor at the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission for approximately five years. In August of 1990, he was transferred to the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission. Mr. Thomas was appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court to serve as Grievance Administrator in December, 1990. He served as Grievance Administrator for approximately eight years. As the Grievance Administrator, he was responsible for supervising the agency’s staff and investigating/prosecuting the most serious cases brought before that agency.  While serving as Grievance Administrator, Mr. Thomas also gained extensive experience in appellate work before the Michigan Supreme Court.

 

     Mr. Thomas’ experience as an assistant prosecutor at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, the Judicial Tenure Commission, and his tenure as the Grievance Administrator at the Attorney Grievance Commission have given him the unique ability to effectively deal with federal and state agencies.  After his service at the Attorney Grievance Commission, Mr. Thomas began practicing in specialty areas of criminal defense, Judicial Tenure Commission proceedings, Attorney Grievance Commission proceedings, and Character and Fitness proceedings. Due to his extensive experience in the disciplinary field, Mr. Thomas has been sought after to provide expert opinions in the areas of legal malpractice, standards of care, fee disputes and to assist other attorneys and judges with the interpretation and/or application of the Michigan Rules of Professional Responsibility and the Code of Judicial Conduct.  He also has served as an adjunct professor of Professional Responsibility at the University of Detroit Mercy Law School and Detroit College of Law. 

 

     His experience in criminal defense representation is quite broad, having represented individuals in both state and federal courts.  Mr. Thomas has handled a number of high profile cases in southeastern Michigan, and as a result has gained extensive experience in effectively dealing with the media.
